How to Use SiteTopo to Generate Contours from Survey Points




SiteTopo is a software tool that allows you to create 3D models of land surfaces based on survey points. It can also export your data as a DXF file that you can import into your CAD program. In this article, we will show you how to use SiteTopo to generate contours from survey points and export them as a DXF file. We will also show you how to import the DXF file into AutoCAD and create a 3D surface from it.


Step 1: Download and Install SiteTopo




You can download SiteTopo from https://sitetopo.com/. It is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10. You can try it for free for 30 days, after which you will need to purchase a registration code to continue using it.


After downloading the setup file, run it and follow the instructions to install SiteTopo on your computer. You will see a shortcut icon on your desktop that you can use to launch the program.


Step 2: Open a Survey Point File in SiteTopo




A survey point file is a text file that contains the coordinates of survey points in a tabular format. The first row of the file should contain the column headers: ID, X, Y, Z, and Description. The ID column should contain unique identifiers for each point. The X, Y, and Z columns should contain the easting, northing, and elevation values of each point. The Description column can contain any additional information about each point.


You can create a survey point file using any text editor or spreadsheet program. You can also use a survey data collector or a GPS device to record survey points and export them as a text file. Make sure that the file has a .txt extension and that the values are separated by tabs or commas.


To open a survey point file in SiteTopo, click on the File menu and select Open Survey Point File. Browse to the location of your file and click Open. You will see a preview of your data in the Data View tab. You can edit or delete any points if needed.


Step 3: Generate Contours from Survey Points




To generate contours from survey points, click on the Contour tab. You will see a graphical view of your data in the Contour View tab. You can zoom in or out using the mouse wheel or the buttons on the toolbar.


You can adjust the contour settings by clicking on the Settings button on the toolbar. You can change the contour interval, color, style, and label options. You can also choose whether to show or hide grid lines, axes, points, descriptions, and elevation values.


After setting your preferences, click on the Generate button on the toolbar. SiteTopo will create contours based on your data and display them in the Contour View tab. You can save your contours as an image file by clicking on the Save Image button on the toolbar.


Step 4: Export Contours as a DXF File




To export your contours as a DXF file that you can import into your CAD program, click on the File menu and select Export Contours as DXF File. Choose a location and a name for your file and click Save. SiteTopo will create a DXF file that contains polylines representing your contours.


Step 5: Import DXF File into AutoCAD




To import your DXF file into AutoCAD, open AutoCAD and start a new drawing. Click on the Insert tab and select Import. Browse to the location of your DXF file and click Open. AutoCAD will import your contours as polylines in model space.


Step 6: Create a 3D Surface from Contours




To create a 3D surface from your contours in AutoCAD, you need to use the SURFPATCH command. This command creates a surface by fitting patches through selected e0e6b7cb5c
